Sonakanda Fort at Bandar

Sonakanda Fort at Bandar

Sonakanda fort is another old river defensive fortification, on the eastern bank of the river Lakhya at Bandar, opposite Narayanganj. The history of this fort has been given earlier. Today, the river has slightly shifted westward, and the fort is hidden behind the industrial buildings of the present time. The defensive walls and the big drum are still in existence. According to tradition, the name Sonakanda is derived from Sona, the widowed daughter of the Barabhuinya chief Kedar Rai who cried (kanda) at this spot, while being carried away by Isa Khan.
